PTSD Awareness Month: Healing Happens in Relationship
June is PTSD Awareness Month, and at Inner Revolution, we want to gently remind you that trauma doesn't always look the way it's portrayed in the media. PTSD isn't just combat-related or tied to one-time catastrophic events—it can stem from ongoing experiences of shame, neglect, abuse, fatphobia, medical trauma, and the chronic stress of living in a world that doesn't always feel safe.
We specialize in the healing of trauma and its many ripple effects—especially how it shows up in body image distress, eating disorders, and disconnection from self. Whether your trauma was a single event or a slow accumulation over time, we’re here to support your healing with compassionate, trauma-informed care that honors the body, the nervous system, and the protective strategies you’ve developed to survive.
Trauma and the Body: Why Healing Can’t Be Just Talk
For so many of our clients, trauma is not just stored in the mind—it lives in the body. The way we experience hunger, fullness, touch, movement, and even the mirror can be deeply shaped by past trauma.
When you've experienced trauma, especially in relation to your body or your identity, it can feel unsafe to fully inhabit yourself. This disconnection often shows up through disordered eating, hypervigilance around body image, or difficulty trusting your needs.
That’s why we don’t just talk about trauma—we work with it. Using modalities like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and IFS (Internal Family Systems), we help clients reconnect to the parts of themselves that carry pain, shame, or fear—and begin to build a sense of safety and trust in their own bodies again.
EMDR for PTSD, Eating Disorders & Body-Based Trauma
EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for treating PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. It helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they’re no longer stuck in the “danger” zone. This is especially helpful for those whose eating disorders or body image struggles are rooted in past trauma:
Being bullied or shamed for your body
Medical trauma or fatphobic treatment
Experiences of control, neglect, or abuse around food
Living in a body that’s marginalized or misunderstood
Through EMDR, clients begin to experience these memories with less emotional intensity—and from a place of empowerment rather than fear. This creates more space to explore gentle nourishment, embodiment, and self-compassion.
IFS: Healing the Inner System
IFS invites us to see ourselves not as broken, but as made up of many parts—each with a story and a function. Some parts protect us by restricting food or over-controlling our bodies. Others soothe with bingeing or disconnect. Others may carry shame, sadness, or a deep longing to be seen.
In IFS work, we help clients build compassionate relationships with these parts. Rather than trying to silence or fix them, we listen. We get curious. We invite in the possibility of healing. And over time, clients begin to experience more internal harmony—and more freedom.
Supervision & Consultation: Holding Space for Healers
We also believe in nurturing the healers. If you're a therapist working with trauma, eating disorders, or body image concerns, you know how complex and layered this work can be. That’s why we offer clinical supervision and consultation for therapists seeking:
Guidance on integrating EMDR or IFS into client work
Support around countertransference and vicarious trauma
A weight-inclusive, HAES-aligned lens
Space to feel seen, held, and grounded in your own clinical intuition
We’re not just here for clients—we’re here for clinicians, too. Because when therapists feel supported, the ripple effect benefits every client they serve.
You Deserve to Heal
If PTSD Awareness Month brings up feelings of discomfort, reflection, or even curiosity about your own healing journey—you’re not alone. Trauma recovery is not linear, and it doesn’t need to be rushed. Whether you’re just beginning to explore your story, or you’re ready to go deeper, we’re here to walk with you.
At Inner Revolution, we offer a space where all parts of you are welcome. Where your body isn’t something to be controlled, but something to be gently reconnected with. Where your trauma story is honored, but doesn’t have to define you.
Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to learn how our practice can support you—or to explore supervision if you’re a clinician seeking connection and growth.
